Postdoctoral Research Associate in Data Curation

Following an 18-month study of data management policy and practice, and the implementation of a new certification program in data curation, the University of North Texas seeks a Postdoctoral Fellow to help evaluate and implement best practices in data curation and data repository services on the UNT campus. UNT is a national leader in digital libraries, research data management, and Open Access.

The Fellow will be based in UNT’s new Digital Scholarship Co-Operative http://disco.unt.edu/, an initiative to foster the creative development and use of digital resources for research, teaching, and learning. The Co-Op is affiliated with the UNT Libraries, and serves researchers, faculty, and students from across the disciplines.

The fellow will be responsible for:

Primary Duties:

  • Evaluating and contributing to current data curation practices on the UNT campus
  • Participate in ongoing assessment program to evaluate the impact of data management plan support services and UNT Digital Library’s data and scholarly works repository services on faculty research
  • Assisting with the development of data management plans for funding applications using the DMPTool
  • Collaborate with the Repository Librarian on implementing and socializing the UNT Digital Library’s data repository services on the campus
  • Provide support for the UNT Scholarly Works Repository and Data Repository including:
    • Composing web text and promotional materials
    • Conducting intake for new materials and data sets for the Repositories
    • Developing metadata for new materials and data sets
  • Participate in the UNT Data Lifecycle Consulting Team activities supporting research data management

Additional Duties:

  • Contribute to research on curation of data sets from theses and dissertations
  • Help develop data curation strategies and policy for the UNT campus
  • Develop and implement workshops and other programming relevant to data curation for students, faculty, and staff
  • Contribute to major event planning, including the annual Open Access Symposium
  • Contribute to development initiatives including grants, foundation awards, and community relations

This postdoc will include a significant component of mentoring and professional development, and the fellow will be encouraged to present and publish from their own research while at UNT. The Fellow will report to the Director for Digital Scholarship. This is an 18-month appointment.

Recent PhDs from any discipline in a STEM field or the information or social sciences are invited to apply.

Desired Skills & Attributes:

  • Deep subject knowledge in a science or social science
  • Understanding of discipline-specific data curation practices
  • Understanding of data life-cycle management systems in general
  • Interest in assessment of institutional processes and policies
  • Interest in and support of the values of Open Access within the academy
  • Understanding of project management workflows (PMI certification would be optimal but is not required)
  • Ability to communicate effectively with lay persons, and scholars outside the Fellow’s home discipline
  • Desire to learn and to contribute to knowledge production in an interdisciplinary environment
  • Comfort working in a collaborative environment
  • Tolerance for ambiguity and change
