Claremont University Consortium offers a CLIR Fellowship focusing on visual materials. This position will provide the opportunity to work with students, faculty, and librarians at The Claremont Colleges, a set of five elite liberal arts colleges and two outstanding graduate schools.
Position title: Visual Materials Curator
Primary purpose/general description: Under the supervision of the Assistant Director and Head of Special Collections, the Visual Materials Curator provides physical and digital access to a broad range of pictorial and graphics collections housed in Special Collections, Honnold/Mudd Library and Denison Library . Oversees the identification, cataloging, and preservation of these collections. Formats include but are not limited to photographs, original works of art on paper, prints, maps, and architectural drawings. Position also serves as subject specialist and faculty liaison for Art and Art history.
Essential Functions:
- Develops and implements cataloging and documentation policies for visual materials.
- Manages projects for cataloging and preserving visual materials.
- In collaboration with special collections staff and faculty, selects materials to be prepared for digitization. Works closely with CCDL staff on digital images projects.
- Contributes to metadata creation for digital projects with visual materials.
- Serves as Libraries' art subject specialist. Collaborates with art and art history faculty in collection development and advanced instruction
- Provides reference and instructional services related to visual materials.
- Interprets visual materials collections through exhibitions, publications, tours, presentations and outreach programs.
- May assist in identifying funding sources and preparing grant applications as needed, including researching, compiling required data, and writing grant materials.
- Participates in Libraries' planning through service on teams and other groups.
Required knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of the creation of visual materials and their role in historical and contemporary culture.
- Knowledge of and interest in current developments in archival processing, digital information technologies and their uses in special collections.
- Understanding of the role of libraries and scholarly communication in an academic environment.
- Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies quickly and effectively.
- Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills.
- Excellent project planning skills and proven ability to supervise work of others.
- Ability to work effectively as a team member in a dynamic and rapidly changing environment.
Highly desirable skills and knowledge
- knowledge/experience of/with current and emerging standards and methods of cataloging visual materials, both in print and digital
- Experience with basic preservation and conservation standards and methods
Required qualifications
Education: Advanced degree in art, art history; museum studies; material culture; or position- appropriate field in the humanities.
Experience: Experience identifying a wide variety of visual resources. Ability to effectively supervise staff. Experience with standard computer office applications such as Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint or other productivity software.

Hours: Workweek of 40 hours. May require some evening and weekend hours.
Classification and status: Exempt, full-time twelve-month position.
