Fellowships in Data Curation for Medieval Studies

For Hosts and Prospective Hosts

These two-year fellowships, supported by a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, will provide five recent Ph.D.s with professional development, education, and training opportunities in data curation for the humanities, specifically in sub-disciplines related to Medieval Studies. The fellows’ work must draw upon their disciplinary expertise in order to help advance data curation practices and services at their host institutions.

  • Calendar and duration: The two-year fellowships must begin between June and September. All new fellows must complete a one- to two-week training seminar in July 2013.
  • Eligibility: All fellows must have completed the Ph.D. within the five years preceding the fellowship appointment. Fellows' research expertise must be in an area that relates to Medieval Studies.
  • Host institutions: For 2013-2015, an advisory panel of experts will select five institutions with nationally recognized strengths in Medieval Studies, the management of large-scale digital projects, and data curation. Ten finalist institutions under consideration will be contacted by CLIR and asked to submit a fellowship proposal by January 31, 2013. Position descriptions will be posted on this site by the end of February 2013.
  • Subject areas: Open to any specialty or domain related to Medieval Studies in which the Ph.D. is the terminal degree.
  • Salary: Set at $60,000 per year. Benefits should be comparable to other academic staff at the host institution.
  • Funding: Salary costs ($60,000 per year) will be paid by CLIR to the host institution in semi-annual installments. A portion of the benefits costs will also be paid by CLIR to the host institution at the time of these installments. The host institution will be responsible for making up the difference between this portion and the full benefits package offered at the institution. CLIR will pay all costs for the fellows' education and training throughout the fellowship year (a $5,000 value), including all travel, room, and board costs for required program meetings held each summer and winter, as well as monthly online symposia. All additional costs related to the fellowship (such as recruitment costs, moving expenses, and indirect costs) are the responsibility of host institutions.
