The University of North Carolina at Greensboro
The University Libraries
Postdoctoral Fellowship
The University of North Carolina at Greensboro University Libraries offer a one-year CLIR Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Humanities for a scholar interested in Theatre Arts and Theatre History. The Fellow will be based in the Hodges Special Collections and University Archives Department, and will work very closely with the recently donated papers of Dr. Robert Hansen to our Libraries. A finding aid has been created for the Robert C. Hansen Performing Arts Collection. This collection consists of stage designs, autographs, photographs, books, playbills, posters, printed ephemera, sheet music and other items relating to the performing arts. See this link: http://www.uncg.edu/ure/news/stories/2007/May/HansenGift052307.htm.
We are seeking a CLIR Fellow who will segment out those portions of the Robert Hansen Performing Arts Collection that can be used in the classroom environment and create a digital exhibit, including digitization, web design, metadata to enhance description. Copyright issues will need to be explored in this process. The Fellow would work with Dr. Hansen on developing a website that can be incorporated into the classes that he teaches, and into an online theater course that he is interested in delivering. The work in this collection could become the basis for this online class. The Fellow will develop pedagogy for incorporating the digital exhibit into the classroom. The Theatre Department is hiring a Theatre History faculty member this academic year, and the Fellow would be encouraged to collaborate with this new faculty member and the rich treasures in the Robert Hansen Collection.
The Fellow will be engaged in all aspects of the collection, including design of a web site, creating metadata, and working closely with Bob Hansen and other interested faculty members in the Theatre Department and/or other performing arts units on campus, publicizing the resources of the collection, and implementing these resources into the classroom environment. Beyond the blending of library materials into course development, the Fellow could be expected to write a grant to expand the Hansen collection, with options of either adding more theatre items, or virtually by making it cross-searchable online with other related collections (e.g. Belknap Collection in Florida).
The Theatre Department has a collection of thesis-like student performances that could be added to the Libraries' ETD/IR project. As the Fellow works closely with faculty members in the Theatre Department, issues of scholarly communication and self-archiving of scholarly works will become evident and can be addressed. This meshes clearly with our effort to inform all academic faculty about these issues and issues of open access and institutional repositories.
In addition to receiving exposure to specific aspects of librarianship, including hands-on archival work plus digital resources and their implementation into the classroom setting, the Fellow will receive a broad orientation to the activities and challenges of today's academic research library by meeting with all departments within the library and the academic faculty in the Theatre Department and related departments depending on the Fellow's academic background. The Fellow will attend administrative meetings of library faculty and attend university-wide and national professional development events.
