The Evolving National Information Network

Conclusion

The success of the NSFNET and the larger Internet of which it is a leading component has supplied, through the NREN Program, a path to a National Information Infrastructure (NII). The NII will have an immense impact, not only on the library community, but on the fashion in which research, development, scholarship, and teaching are carried out in our society. The extension of these capabilities to the broader society will provide opportunities to transform information provision and the way in which people work together. Libraries and educational institutions will have the opportunity to play a critical role in the networked future. Extraordinary effort and wisdom will be required to insure that our institutions respond to the opportunity and that information technology is used to realize the promise of a more productive, better informed society.
