WHAT IS THE WORLD WIDE WEB?
- Known also by the terms: Web, W3, or WWW
- Developed in Geneva, Switzerland by scientists at the CERN Physics
Laboratory - Software used by individuals to “surf” the web are known as ” clients” or ” browsers”.
Netscape and Mosaic are two popular browsers. - Relies on hypertext and hypermedia as its means of interacting with
users. Hypertext is basically the same as regular text with an important - Easy to browse (just point and click)
- Graphical images makes browsing or “surfing” enjoyable and fun
SOME NECESSARY TERMINOLOGY
- Home Page
- the opening screen of a Web site
- Universal Resource Locator (URL)
- the technical name of a Web address. Camden County Library’s Home Page
URL is http://www.cyberenet.net/~ccl - Hyper Text Transfer Protocol (HTTP)
- the language that Web clients and servers use to communicate with each
other to transfer hypertext or hypermedia files (usually identified by
the extension of .html or .html) - Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML)
- the programming language that makes hypertext files readable by all
computers running WWW client software
SKILLS TO PRACTICE
- Select a site or file by URL
- – Navigate directories with function keys (back, forward, home, reload,
etc.) - Download documents
- Search the Web with at least 3 search tools (e.g. Webcrawler, Yahoo,
Lycos) - Find text within a document
- Learn more about the Internet from an informative site or directory
that you find yourself while “surfing”
