About the Authors

Chris Ferguson is dean for information resources at Pacific Lutheran University. Previous positions include executive director for public services of an integrated library-computing organization at the University of Southern California and director of USC’s Leavey Library, which created the nation’s first information commons.

Michael A. Keller is the Ida M. Green University Librarian, director of academic information resources at Stanford University, publisher of HighWire Press, and publisher of the Stanford University Press. Before coming to Stanford, Mr. Keller was associate university librarian and director of collection development at Yale University. He has also served as music librarian at the University of California, Berkeley, and at Cornell University.

Karin Wittenborg has been university librarian at the University of Virginia since September 1993.Ê She came to Virginia after eight years as associate university librarian for collection development at University of California, Los Angeles. Before then, she held a variety of positions in the Stanford University Libraries. She spent 1980Ð1981 at the M.I.T. Library as a Council on Library Resources academic management intern.
