For 2022 COmmunity Data Fellowships

  • July 13 and 14: CLIR will hold two orientation sessions for new participants. The supervisor session will be July 13 and the fellow session will be July 14.
  • August 29 – September 2, 2022: The Fellow and the Fellow’s Supervisor(s) will participate in a virtual CLIR orientation seminar.
  • October 9 – 12, 2022: The Fellow will have the opportunity to attend the 2022 DLF Forum and Learn@DLF, provided there are no public health or other safety concerns that would make this inadvisable. The Fellow’s Supervisor (or one of the Supervisors if there are multiple people designated for this role) will have the opportunity to attend the DLF Forum once while participating in the program.
  • June 30, 2023: The Partner Organization will submit to CLIR their first two annual reports, one to be written by the Fellow and the other by the Fellow’s Supervisor.
  • Summer 2023 or 2024: One of the Fellow’s Supervisors will have the opportunity to participate in the prestigious Leading Change Institute once during the program.

DLF Community Calendar

  • CLIR may provide the Fellow (annually) and one of the Fellow’s Supervisors (once during the fellowship period) opportunities to attend CLIR’s Digital Library Federation (DLF) Forum provided there are no public health or other safety concerns that would make this inadvisable.
  • CLIR will provide regular online sessions, monthly during the fall and spring months when not meeting in-person, for the Fellow during the course of each fellowship year, with content suitable to the Fellow’s needs and goals.
  • CLIR will provide quarterly online sessions for the Fellow’s Supervisor during the course of each fellowship, with content suitable for helping the Supervisor provide support and guidance to the Fellow and for helping the Supervisor connect the Fellow’s project(s) to related activities happening at other institutions participating in the program.
  • Summer 2023 or 2024: One of the Fellow’s Supervisors will have the opportunity to participate in the prestigious Leading Change Institute once during the program.
  • CLIR staff and consultants will be available to provide confidential advice and support to the Fellow for the duration of his or her fellowship upon request, as best suits the needs of the Fellow and position.
  • CLIR staff and consultants will be available to provide confidential advice and support to the Fellow’s Supervisor for the duration of the fellowship upon request, as best suits the needs of the Supervisor and the Fellow’s position.
  • CLIR staff will also offer the Fellow opportunities to obtain confidential feedback and support from volunteer mentors who are fellowship alumni.

CLIR will invoice the Partner Organization for USD $13,900 at the beginning of each year of the fellowship to cover costs related to the facilitation and operation of the fellowship program.

Contingent upon CLIR’s receipt of the Partner Organization’s annual payments, CLIR will:

  • pay the Fellow a stipend of US $3,000 a year for research, travel, and development. Stipend payments will be issued by CLIR to the Fellow by September 1, or within ten (10) business days after CLIR receives the annual payment from the Partner Organization.
  • reimburse expenses related to the Fellow’s attendance at the in-person fellowship meetings described in Section 2 above, and any other required program meetings, in accordance with CLIR’s travel policy.
  • reimburse expenses related to the Fellow’s Supervisor’s attendance at the in-person fellowship meetings described in Section 2 above, and any other required program meetings, in accordance with CLIR’s travel policy.
  • The Partner Organization agrees that the Fellow will participate in up to three in-person meetings during the fellowship. The Partner Organization agrees that travel to and participation in online and in-person seminars are required for the fellowship, and neither the Fellow nor the Fellow’s supervisor will be required to take vacation time or unpaid leave to participate.
  • CLIR will also provide regular online discussion sessions for the Fellow, and occasional online discussion sessions for the Fellow’s Supervisor. Participation in these sessions is required for the fellowship. The Partner Organization agrees that neither the Fellow nor the Fellow’s Supervisor will be required to take vacation time or unpaid leave to participate.
  • From time to time, CLIR may offer opportunities to the Fellow to participate in additional, optional meetings or projects that are related to the Fellow’s professional development goals. The Partner Organization agrees to allow the Fellow the choice to participate in these activities so long as they do not impede the Fellow’s progress toward the goals of the fellowship. The Partner Organization agrees that the Fellow will not be required to take vacation time or unpaid leave to participate in CLIR-sponsored activities.
  • The Partner Organization agrees to arrange so that the Supervisor will have sufficient time to meet regularly with the Fellow during the fellowship.  Meetings between the Fellow and the Fellow’s Supervisor should be scheduled at least once every two weeks during the fellowship.
  • Should the Fellow’s designated Supervisor change during the course of the fellowship, the Partner Organization agrees to notify CLIR’s Program Officer promptly and to supply the name and contact information of the Fellow’s new Supervisor.
  • The Partner Organization agrees to submit to CLIR annual reports of the Fellow’s progress written by the Fellow and the Fellow’s supervisor. The Fellow’s and the Fellow’s supervisor’s reports will be written and submitted independently. Reports must be submitted using CLIR’s online reporting system.

*Grant-funded fellowships also require an annual financial report. A financial template is provided here, or you can use your institution’s template.

Remaining Funds for Grant-Funded Fellowships

Occasionally, grant funds remain at the end of a fellowship. Institutions are required to report this to CLIR and to return all unspent funds in amounts greater than $100, by check or ACH, to CLIR. Directions for returning funds are provided in CLIR’s Returned Funds Policy for Grants and Grant-Funded Fellowships, available on the CLIR Policies web page.

Due to the substantial fees involved, CLIR cannot accept payments by credit card.

Emily Beagle

Co-faculty

Emily co-leads programming for current fellows. She is a program alum and currently an associate, Break Through Technology, at the Rocky Mountain Institute.

Marcia Chatelain

Mentor & Advisory Committee (ex-offico)

Marcia is the mentor for the African American and African Studies fellows. She is a professor of History and African American Studies at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.

Jennifer Garcon

Co-faculty

Jennifer co-leads programming for current fellows. She is a program alum and currently the digital scholarship librarian at University of Pennsylvania Libraries.

Jodi Reeves Eyre

Program Officer

Jodi manages the program’s scholarship, leadership, and re-granting components. She handles day-to-day program communications, outreach, and engagement.

Advisory Committee

The committee comprises digital scholarship specialists, data curation educators, scholars and specialists, and program alumni with data curation experience across disciplines.

John Borghi

Stanford University

A cognitive neuroscientist by training, John is the manager of research and instruction at Lane Medical Library at Stanford. He was a CLIR postdoctoral fellow at California Digital Library (2016-2018).

 

Scout Calvert

University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Scout is a research data librarian at University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Her current projects trace the social aspects of data-centric knowledge production among genealogists, cattle breeders, and citizen historians.

Jeanine Finn

Claremont Colleges

Jeanine received her MLS from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign & PhD in information science from the University of Texas at Austin. She was a fellow at The Claremont Colleges Library, where she is now the coordinator for data science and digital scholarship.

Julia Flanders

Northeastern University Library

Julia is a professor of the practice in English and the director of the Digital Scholarship Group in the Northeastern University Library. She also directs the Women Writers Project and serves as editor in chief of Digital Humanities Quarterly.

Portia Hopkins

Rice University

Portia holds a doctorate in American Studies from the University of Maryland, College Park. She is the CLIR/DLF Postdoctoral Research Associate in Data Curation for African American Studies at Rice University.

Sarah Lynn Patterson

University of Massachusetts Amherst

Sarah Lynn is an Assistant Professor of English at University of Massachusetts Amherst where she studies 19th century African American literature, social movements, and humanist approaches to digital culture.
